Vinesh Phogat banned for staying & training away from Indian team
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday “temporarily suspended” star grappler Vinesh Phogat for indiscipline during her forgettable Tokyo Olympics campaign and also issued notice to young Sonam Malik for misconduct.
“The first charge is that she refused to stay with the Indian team (during the Tokyo Olympics). The second charge was that she refused to train with the Indian team,” WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh told The Indian Express. “Another charge against her is that the Indian Olympic Association singlet, which is approved, was not worn by her. She instead wore her sponsor Nike’s singlet. She was not supposed to wear that.”
Vinesh cannot compete in any event until she files a reply and a final decision is taken. The WFI disciplinary committee will take up the matter and decide the further course of action.
The officials who were in Tokyo told PTI that Vinesh had created ruckus when she was allotted a room near those of her Indian teammates — Sonam, Anshu Malik and Seema Bisla — arguing that she might contract coronavirus since these wrestlers travelled to Tokyo from India.
